XR Ski Goggles
December 1, 2025
The PROVUU XR goggles are a new piece of wearable technology developed by a Swiss startup to solve a specific and dangerous problem in winter sports: poor visibility. Skiers and snowboarders often face conditions known as flat light or whiteouts, where fog or heavy snow blends the sky and the ground into a uniform white haze. In these conditions, the human eye cannot distinguish the texture of the snow, making it impossible to see bumps, dips, or cliffs. PROVUU uses Augmented Reality (AR) to artificially enhance the contrast of the terrain, allowing riders to see invisible obstacles.
Unlike standard goggles that just use tinted plastic to block sun, these goggles are equipped with and 3D cameras mounted on the front and built-in displays. When you enter bad weather, you press a button to activate the system. The cameras capture the scene, and an onboard computer processes the image in real-time, boosting the contrast by up to 75%. This digitally processed image—where ridges and bumps are clearly outlined—is then projected onto a display inside the goggles. The result is that you are essentially skiing by looking at a live, enhanced video feed of the real world.
