September 2025 Skywatching Tips

September 3, 2025

September 2025 brings a wealth of celestial sights for nighttime skywatchers, with crisp autumn evenings offering ideal conditions for observing planets, stars, and seasonal transitions. One of the month’s standout features is Saturn, which appears especially bright and well-positioned for viewing throughout September. Its rings are tilted at a favorable angle, making them visible even through modest backyard telescopes. For those without equipment, Saturn remains a prominent golden point of light in the southeastern sky after sunset.

Early risers will be treated to a graceful alignment between the Moon, Venus, and Regulus around mid-month. These three objects will appear close together in the eastern sky just before dawn, creating a striking visual arrangement that’s easy to spot with the naked eye. Venus, often called the morning star, shines brilliantly and serves as a helpful guide to locate the others nearby.

Later in the month, the autumnal equinox marks the official start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. This event brings nearly equal lengths of day and night and signals a shift in the sky’s character. Constellations like Pegasus and Andromeda begin to rise earlier in the evening, while summer favorites such as Scorpius and Sagittarius slowly fade into the west. Learn more at NASA.
