Private Tablet
April 8, 2026
The Brax Technologies open_slate is a modular, privacy-focused 2-in-1 tablet designed to run both open-source Android and native Linux distributions. The tablet emphasizes user-serviceability and hardware-level privacy controls, positioning itself as a secure alternative to mainstream tablets that are often locked into corporate ecosystems.
The hardware is available in two primary configurations, both powered by the octa-core MediaTek Genio 720 chipset. The base model features 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and a 12-inch 2.4K IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The Pro version upgrades the specifications to 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 2.8K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. A defining feature of the open_slate is its modularity; it includes a user-removable 8,000 mAh battery and an internal M.2 expansion slot that can be used to add up to 1TB of SSD storage, a cellular modem, or even an AI accelerator card.
Privacy is integrated directly into the physical design through five hardware kill switches. These allow users to physically cut power to the cameras, microphone, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi/Network modules, ensuring they cannot be activated by software without the user's knowledge. The device is also rich in connectivity, offering two USB 3.2 Type-C ports, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, a mini-HDMI port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a microSD slot. For productivity, it includes a 5-pin pogo connection for low-latency keyboard docking and supports active styluses.
On the software side, the tablet ships with BraxOS, a de-Googled version of the Android Open Source Project. It is also engineered to support various Linux distributions out of the box, such as Ubuntu, Ubuntu Touch, and Debian.
