Linux Handheld Computer

February 17, 2026

The Mecha Comet is an open-source, modular Linux handheld computer that prioritizes repairability and customization over the locked-down ecosystems typical of mainstream mobile devices. Its modular architecture allows users to easily swap or upgrade internal components, ensuring the device can evolve with new technology rather than becoming obsolete.

The core of the Mecha Comet is its compatibility with various System-on-Modules (SoMs), allowing it to run a full Linux desktop environment. It features a high-resolution 7-inch touchscreen and is built with a rugged, industrial aesthetic. Connectivity includes multiple USB ports, an Ethernet port, and a dedicated expansion header for hardware tinkering.

One of the most significant aspects of the project is its commitment to Right to Repair principles. The chassis is designed to be easily opened, and the company provides detailed documentation and schematics for its hardware. Users can choose from different configurations during the Kickstarter campaign, ranging from basic kits for DIY assembly to fully assembled units ready for immediate use. The software experience is equally open, supporting various Linux distributions such as Debian and Arch, giving users total control over their data and privacy.
