Holographic Frame
March 16, 2026
The Looking Glass Musubi is the first consumer-oriented holographic photo and video frame designed to turn standard digital media into glasses-free 3D experiences. Launched on Kickstarter in March 2026, the device is built on patented Hololuminescent Display technology, which combines 2D display layers with a 3D holographic volume. This allows multiple people to view the same hologram simultaneously from various angles without the need for headsets or special glasses. The frame is a 7-inch portrait-oriented display housed in a clear acrylic and aluminum chassis, intended to sit on a desk or shelf as a holographic time capsule.
The core functionality of the Musubi centers on its ease of use and privacy. It includes a free desktop application for Mac and PC that uses local AI-powered Gaussian splatting to convert any standard photo or video clip into a hologram. This process requires no cloud processing, subscriptions, or internet connection once the software is installed. For videos up to 30 seconds long, users can select a specific hologram moment that the AI reconstructs in 3D; when played on the frame, the video runs normally and then pauses on that selected holographic freeze frame.
The internal hardware features 8GB of storage, which is sufficient to hold approximately 1,000 holographic moments. The device is designed for standalone operation and does not require Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; all media is transferred directly from a computer via the included USB-C cable. It also features a built-in speaker for audio playback and a rechargeable 2,000mAh battery that provides up to three hours of wireless use, though it can also be kept plugged in for continuous display. A single tactile button on the front allows users to cycle through their stored library of memories.
