The Sphero RVR+ is a highly versatile, programmable robot designed to bridge the gap between simple educational toys and advanced robotics platforms. Built with a heavy-duty, all-terrain tread system and a high-torque motor, the RVR+ is capable of navigating diverse surfaces including carpet, wood, and outdoor terrain. It featurs a universal 4-pin UART expansion port and an onboard power supply that allows users to connect and power third-party hardware such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or BBC micro:bit.

The RVR+ is equipped with a sophisticated suite of onboard sensors that enable autonomous behavior and precise navigation. These include a color sensor for surface detection and line following, an infrared sensor for robot-to-robot communication, and a 6-axis IMU consisting of an accelerometer and gyroscope to track orientation and movement. Unlike many basic robots that rely on simple timed motor commands, the RVR+ utilizes professional-grade control loops and high-resolution encoders.

The software ecosystem supports a wide range of skill levels, from beginners to advanced developers. Through the Sphero Edu app, users can program the robot using a graphical Draw interface, an intermediate Blocks system based on Scratch, or by writing actual JavaScript code. For those integrating external microcontrollers, Sphero provides comprehensive SDKs in Python and C++, allowing the RVR+ to act as a mobile base for complex projects like autonomous delivery rovers, environmental monitors, or AI-driven security bots.
