Dual-Arm Robot Torso
April 7, 2024
AMBIDEX from Naver Labs is a dual-arm robot torso that is different than most humanoid robots today, because it uses an innovative cable mechanism to move its body parts. Many humanoid robots in development today use motors for joints. This works well, but motors add a good amount of weight at each joint. The overall weight of some motorized humanoid robots make them harder to control and less safe around humans. AMBIDEX uses lightweight cables in a fashion similar to human tendons, to bend the joints in the arm, wrist and fingers. By using cables, AMBIDEX's movements are designed to be smoother, faster, and more precise. Research is underway for learning methods that enable the AMBIDEX robot to quickly learn how to perform complex tasks that humans do everyday.
