AI Robot Tank

July 30, 2025

The Hiwonder MentorPi T1 Robot Tank Chassis is a versatile AI robotics platform built for advanced development in autonomous navigation, machine vision, and human-robot interaction. Powered by the Raspberry Pi 5 and compatible with ROS2, the MentorPi T1 combines rugged mobility with high-performance computing.

The tank chassis features a full metal aluminum alloy frame with shock-absorbing suspension and high-torque encoder motors, allowing it to traverse uneven terrain with stability and precision. Measuring approximately 10.9 by 7.7 by 7.2 inches (27.8 by 19.5 by 18.2 centimeters), the compact form factor supports modular expansion and includes multiple mounting points for sensors and controllers.

The MentorPi features a dual-controller setup: the RRC Lite controller handles low-level motor control, while the Raspberry Pi 5 manages high-level tasks such as SLAM mapping, path planning, and AI inference. The onboard 3D depth camera and TOF lidar enable real-time obstacle detection, target tracking, and 3D environmental mapping. These capabilities are enhanced by YOLOv5 model training, allowing the robot to recognize road signs, traffic lights, and dynamic objects with high accuracy.

The MentorPi T1 supports multimodal interaction through voice commands, visual recognition, and wireless control via app or joystick. It integrates large language models for natural conversation and decision-making, enabling context-aware responses and adaptive behavior. Developers can program the robot using Python and access ROS2 APIs for custom applications, from autonomous delivery to collaborative robotics.
