3D Printable Robot
March 24, 2026
Coglet is an open-source, 3D-printable robot companion kit created by roboticist Will Cogley, designed to offer a highly expressive and animated desktop project for hobbyists. The project combines intricate mechanical design with electronics and code to create a character capable of fluid, life-like movements. Unlike many static or simplistic DIY robots, Coglet focuses on high-fidelity animatronics, featuring a multi-axis neck and head assembly that allows it to tilt, nod, and look around in a manner that mimics biological movement.
The kit is designed for users who own or have access to a 3D printer, as the majority of the robot's structural and aesthetic components are intended to be printed by the user. This approach keeps the initial cost lower while allowing for customization of the robot's color and finish. The internal skeleton is engineered to fit standard, readily available hardware, such as hobbyist servos and an Arduino-compatible microcontroller. Because the project is open-source, advanced users can modify the code or the mechanical files to add new sensors, features, or behaviors, fostering a community-driven development environment.
